DIGITAL MEDIA AND XENOPHOBIA IN EUROPE
The European Union has been based, since its creation, on the meeting of cultures, as well expressed by the motto adopted since 2000, “United in diversity”.
This vocation has been seriously challenged in the last decade, in which – also following the migration crisis from third countries, as well as the economic crisis – we have witnessed the continuous growth of phenomena such as:
– the rise of racist and xenophobic movements in many European countries;
– the spread, both in the media and in political jargon, of “hate speech”, speeches and communications that promote hatred and discrimination;
– the spread of populist and discriminatory policies.
The general aim of the project DigitMID was to contribute to broaden knowledge and methodologies on how Digital Media can increasingly become a positive tool for young Europeans to develop civic and social skills, and to promote intercultural dialogue.
Three outputs have been produced:
– a collection of good practices;
– video materials produced by the young people within the experimentation activities, all related to the theme of intercultural dialogue and Digital Media;
– videotutorials about the methodologies shared in the practical exchange meetings.
