Thirteen years ago, in the Garbatella district of Rome, a public area was rescued from building speculation.
The citizens of the neighbourhood built a model of active participation in the regeneration of that area, giving life to the experience of the Garbatella Urban Gardens.
Born as a community employment response against the abandonment of that area, today the Orti Urbani are a green space protected and recognised by the territory, with 25 vegetable gardens of about 30 square metres each.
It is not only the vegetables that grow in this experience, as the people who participate in the Urban Gardens.
What develops and builds over time is something even more precious: relationships.
An experience, that of the Urban Gardens in Garbatella, which bears witness to how commitment, participation and community participation and community action can generate stories of change for cities and for Europe.
The practice of urban agriculture, which is widespread throughout Europe, has shown a decidedly positive impact in several areas.
Urban gardens actively contribute to combating the climate emergency, enable the protection of agricultural biodiversity, ensure pesticide-free food consumption, influence the regulation of the local microclimate.
A story started several years ago by the Storie di Mondi Possibili association in Rome, engaged in the collection of stories and experiences related to various issues, including that – increasingly necessary and urgent – of environmental protection.
This section contains all the stories collected by the association in recent years, the numerous photographic contributions that have been the subject of exhibitions and public events, and the video stories
made by participants in the workshop “Stories for change – Video storytelling” by Storie di Mondi Possibili, held in Rome in January and February 2023 during the Garbatella 2023 Orti Urbani Festival.
