Project objectives and activities
DIGITAL MEDIA AND XENOPHOBIA IN EUROPE
The European Union has been based, since its creation, on the meeting of cultures, as well expressed by the motto adopted since 2000, “United in diversity”.
This vocation has been seriously challenged in the last decade, in which – also following the migration crisis from third countries, as well as the economic crisis – we have witnessed the continuous growth of phenomena such as:
– the rise of racist and xenophobic movements in many European countries;
– the spread, both in the media and in political jargon, of “hate speech”, speeches and communications that promote hatred and discrimination;
– the spread of populist and discriminatory policies.
YOUTH, DIGITAL MEDIA AND INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE
The European youth population is almost dichotomous in terms of the spread of xenophobic visions.
We have, on the one hand, young people who – because of the context in which they were formed – have taken on board the capacity for intercultural dialogue, and who therefore adhere to an idea of a society in which diversity coexists peacefully and constructively. European mobility programmes, such as Erasmus, have contributed to the development of this mentality, as well as the increasing presence of a second generation of young European migrants, who experience the difficulty of intercultural dialogue on their skin.
On the other hand, many other young people in Europe seem to adhere to populist and intolerant worldviews in a worrying way. We find – within this category – young people who join xenophobic and racist movements, including quite a few young people from deprived social backgrounds, and who react in this way to the economic and identity crisis. We also find young migrants who radicalise intercultural conflict and are seduced by extremist movements.
Obviously this dichotomy is also reflected in digital media, especially in social media, which represent the environment where young people, the so-called “digital natives”, spend hours and hours of their lives, helping to create their knowledge of the world, and where they represent themselves, building their identity.
Hence the challenge that this project takes up, aimed at improving educational methodologies that use Digital Media to foster attitudes and skills related to intercultural dialogue among young Europeans.
The general aim of the project is to contribute to broaden knowledge and methodologies on how Digital Media can increasingly become a positive tool for young Europeans to develop civic and social skills, and to promote intercultural dialogue.
– 5 meetings will be carried out, addressed to youth workers of the partner organizations, aimed at exchanging good practices on the topic of intercultural dialogue and Digital Media; each meeting will have a specific focus, in order to explore different aspects of the project theme;
– After each meeting the partner organizations will experiment the methodologies learned by carrying out training and animation activities with young people.
Three outputs will also be produced:
– a collection of good practices;
– video materials produced by the young people within the experimentation activities, all related to the theme of intercultural dialogue and Digital Media (a total of 40 videos and 10 podcasts);
– 5 short informative videos about the methodologies shared in the practical exchange meetings.
